About
Based on a touring multi-media show that opened to rave reviews in New York, DC, Chicago and San Francisco, the Illegal Art Exhibit is coming to Philly and is the centerpiece of our month-long Extravaganza!

As laws governing “intellectual property” become more expansive, artists increasingly need legal experts to help sort them out. Borrowing from other artworks—as jazz musicians did in the 1930’s and Looney Tunes animators did in the 40’s—could now land you in court. If the current copyright laws had been in effect then, whole genres such as collage, Pop Art, and Hip Hop might never have existed. Laws rooted in the U.S. Constitution that were meant to facilitate the exchange of ideas are now being used to stifle it.

Does the expansion of intellectual property law inevitably have a silencing effect, discouraging the creation of new works? When do the First Amendment and “intellectual property law collide? What is arts future if current laws and precedents are allowed to stand? What is the public domain and why is it important? How do these policies affect our culture beyond the arts—academics, culture workers and consumers?
