In a time when television has replaced the book as a source of information and storytelling in most of our lives, particularly young people, media literacy has become a valuable way to encourage critical thinking about the media messages we receive so we can make more informed decisions about our lives and communities.

Come learn more about media literacy and how to bring it to your classroom, community group, youth program or other social justice efforts.

This interactive training will cover:
* basic overview of media literacy
* techniques of persuasion commonly used by the media
* deconstructions of media samples with gender, class, race analysis
* the link between media ownership and content
* ways to use media literacy to meet educational standards

Who Should Attend:
School and community-based educators, students, parents, youth leaders, journalists, organizers, activists and anyone else interested!

About Media Literacy:
In today's slick multi-media age, the ability to interpret media messages and a basic understanding of how they are produced are becoming increasingly essential life skills. The importance of media literacy education has long been recognized in countries like Canada and Australia where it is integrated into public education curricula. Similar programs have begun to appear here in the U.S. and the Centers for Disease Control has recognized the potential of media literacy to help combat public health issues such as childhood obesity, diabetes, smoking, and sexually transmitted diseases. Media Tank has been working to bring media literacy initiatives to the Philadelphia area to provide people of all ages with the tools they need to become critical media consumers.

ANDREA ISABEL QUIJADA is the Director of Educational Programs for the New Mexico Media Literacy Project (NMMLP), the nation's largest independent media literacy project founded in 1993 by veteran newscaster Hugh Downs. Andrea has taught media literacy workshops for students, teachers, media activists, community organizers, and health professionals on topics such as media ownership, gender and racial stereotypes, health disparities, and on media literacy as a substance abuse prevention strategy. Before joining NMMLP she spent five years providing community education in schools, juvenile detention facilities, substance abuse treatment centers and community organizations, and has co-founded numerous community organizing projects in New Mexico, including Young Women United, a community organizing project by and for young women of color in southeast Albuquerque.
