| Living
in a time when media has increasing power to shape the values and
opinions of our society, Media Tank works to provide communities
with tools to understand and participate in critical decisions about
our nation's media system and culture. Through our community education,
grassroots organizing and national field-building, we are helping
to define and build an emerging movement for media justice and reform
as a key strategy for social change. |
Media
Tanks work includes media education and grassroots organizing
around issues like media ownership and consolidation, copyright
and intellectual property, the state of journalism and more. Media
Tank is also actively engaged with other groups across the country
in building a national network and infrastructure for the growing
media reform movement.
Our Issues
section delves deeper into each of the major issues we organize
around.
We believe that media literacy and media policy education go hand-in-hand;
you cannot fully critique a media product (a magazine ad, a music
video, a film, etc.) without understanding the forces behind-the-scenes
that created it. Neither can you effectively criticize the corporate
media model without analyzing the products and services they provide.
Media Tanks programs and events seek to provide a holistic
understanding of our nations media system and culture.
Our Events
page will tell you all about past, present and future Media Tank
events. |
| What
is the scope of Media Tanks work? |
Media
Tank is based in Philadelphia. While much of our work centers on
national issues, we approach these issues in a way that is grounded
in local education and organizing. At the same time we use our local
experience to help build the field nationally.
While our work serves both local and national audiences, everything
we do is predicated on our recognition of the indispensability of
grassroots support and the important role that building constituents
at the grassroots level plays in building a national movement. |
| How
did Media Tank start? |
Media
Tank was founded in 2001 by media and social justice activists who
were instrumental in the creation of independent media resources
during the Republican National Convention, and in advancing the
issue of public access television in Philadelphia.
From those efforts, Media Tanks founders saw a need to broaden
the movement for media democracy through media literacy initiatives,
public policy education, and other opportunities to stimulate awareness
about the current media system.
Media Tank was incorporated in January 2002, and soon held its kick-off
event, News or Propaganda: a critical look at media coverage of
the terrorist attacks and U.S. retaliation with John R. MacArthur. |
